I am planning on getting a PS3. Since my Xbox 360 broke 4 times already(Red Rings of Death). I don't want to invest anymore money in any system that will break on me again. Do the PS3 have problems? I heard about the "Yellow light of Death" and that the PS3 Blue-Ray dosen't work after a few months of use. Im not sure if it is a rumor or people just hating on Sony. What I am asking is, the PS3 a good investment or a major let down like Xbox 360? and are those problems I just listed here are true about the PS3? If the problems are real. Would it be wise of me to get a PS3 and are the problems common?

The YLoD and DRE issues on the PS3 are so minimal that you have to be pretty unlucky to get any.

It's a great system, and as an owner of both the PS3 and 360, I'd say the PS3 is the best this gen. I do enjoy my 360 though and think it's a great console, it's just the PS3 is simply better IMO.

Definitely worth owning and you'll enjoy it.

I've had mine for over a year now and no problems to report. That being said, I keep a fan on my PS3 while playing long hours as I live in south Texas and it has been averaging over 100 degrees for the past 15 days and even with the air on it can get pretty hot late in the day. My understanding is that most hardware failures are due to heat.

PS3 is rumored to have a failure rate of <1%.

The PS3 fail rate is 1/10ths of 1%. it's nothing and it only happened to older models. I still suggest giving your system room to breath and be sure to not leg the 360 rub up against it. No no! Fanboys always in fear of a harsh word. I say that cause you don't want that shimmering body scratched up, do ya?

yeah the PS3 is really good quality i run it for 12 hours a day in the summer almost and it hasn't even froze. As long as you don't lock it in a small cabinet or smash it with a sledge hammer it won't break

I thought of the same thing a few months ago, i was a fan of the wii, but most games for the wii are usually around $50-$60, PS3 may have games at that price but it also plays PS1 games, and you would not have to suscribe for internet, PS3 scans for wifi or can be connected for internet. I got it for its gaming, music, movie, and internet capabilities...

PS3's no longer have backwards compatibility, and there's not much reason to play PS1 games. Also Xbox 360 games drop in price quicker. Don't get me wrong, I'm still interested in the PS3, just had to make some corrections.

I've had my PS3 for a few months now and its blown away my expectations. What really did it for me though was the free PlaystationNetwork which doesnt differ much from XboX live besides the fact that its free. And the included WiFi connectibility is also nice because I believe you shell out $60 dollars for a good wireless hook-up for the 360. Another thing I like to put out there for anyone debating on getting a ps3 is the fact that games for the PS3 are on Blu-Ray which has like 7 times the storage capacity as a DVD so in the future, PS3 graphics will blow away Xbox graphics.

actually the ps3 can play the classic ps1 games (Got Final Fantasy7 & Metal Gear Solid), but you are right the backwards compatibility is no more, here is info directly from Playstation.com
Model# CECHL01 (80GB PLAYSTATION 3 System)
This model of the PLAYSTATION 3 system is designed to play PLAYSTATION®3 format software and has limited backward compatibility. This system is not compatible with, and will not play, PlayStation 2 format software. Some PlayStation (PS one™) format software may play on this system. (released November 2008) "This is the current system model sold in stores"

Well I'm playing Parasite Eve right now. If you can't find a reason to play a classic then your not trying. Plus anlot of younger guys missed out on games like FF7 and MGS growing up.

Just dust off your PS3 every week and give it some room and you should be good.

That's a patch so if you play ps2 games that required a harddrive, like everquest or FFXI on a PS3, it'll emulate a PS2 HDD. If you don't a BC PS3, it won't happen. All PS3 at a majority of PS1 games. Older models play them all. The PS2 BC isn't simple software, it's a hardware addition that new systems don't have. I say just trade in your system and buy an older model, if it means that much to you. I made sure I found a 60g cuz that one is 100% BC for all generations of playstation games.

Sorry about you misfortune
