Most RROD happen when the unit overheats so try to keep the console off the floor on a flat surface. I've open a many 360's and found everyone of them to have alot of dust stuck to the front of the heatsink. If you console is out of warranty and you have balls i would suggest opening up your 360 and keeping the heatsink clear of dust. Also the fans on the 360 are pretty weak. if you have the extra cash i would recommend getting a talismoon fan and switching them out since the talismoon fans keep the console cooler than stock. The mods will not affect your gameplay online so no need to worry about getting ban since you're not modding firmware,HDD, ect.. anyways always remember that if you ever open your xbox your warranty will be void. Good luck and GAME ON!

Few things that I found useful to avoid 360 from getting too hot.

1) Try to avoid playing it on 1080p, 1080p just generates too much heat.

2) Upgrade the cooling fan inside the 360. A must!

3) Clean your 360 exhaust fan regularly. Make sure nothing is blocking that exhaust.

4) Avoid putting your 360 on heat absorbing material, like bed sheet for example... I put my 360 on top of a marble tile which I put on top of the table in the middle of the room for better airflow. hehehe

5) Play responsibly around 4-6 hrs, give it a couple of hours of rest after and then you can play again.

6) Before shutting down, give the 360 about 15-30min cooling down time, it will go idle which means it won't do any processing stuff, that will give the fan time to cool the system. Turning the 360 off immediately when its hot will increase the chances of the chip melting hence getting a RRoD. This is recommended btw.

I have a 1st gen 20gb 360. It RRoD on me twice, once bec I over used it the 2nd time I turned it off immediately after playing hours on it. Since then I have thankfully not gotten an RRoD since I followed the steps above given to me by the technician who repaired my 360.

I heard that if you don't buy a 360 you don't have to worry about the "red ring."

I just bought an Elite bundle tonight with Halo 3 and Fable 2. The guys at Gamestop said the new motherboard and chipsets in this should be OK now. Do you think I should still change the fan out? and I have an HD TV with HDMI and want to play in 1080P (when available), so will I have an issue with that?

Viewing in 1080p will generate heat and lots of them, so I do suggest atleast change the fan to a bigger one but ask first if that voids the warranty we wouldn't want that to happen.

I think the Intercooler is what killed mine.
My buddy had to send his back 4 times each time he had the innercooler thing on the back, he got it back this last time and didnt put the intercooler on and its fine now.

A Nyko intercooler ruined my 360 almost 2 years ago. It was fine until I tried removing the intercooler so I could pack up my 360 for a LAN party. Turns out that the intercooler cooled the Xbox, but it created heat in the Xbox's power port, where the intercooler plugged in. When I removed it, that port broke because the heat had corroded it. We sent it to Microsoft to get repaired, but they wouldn't do it because apparantly, by using a 3rd party peripheral, we had voided the warranty, so after at least 2 weeks they sent us back the broken Xbox. We called Nyko, explained the situation, and they gladly replaced it for free within 2 weeks.

Like I said once he removed it the system was fine. It just seems to me that these things cause more problems then they solve. For anyone who was thinking about buying one DON'T! save your UPS guy the trip.

I think the simplist thing you can do is keep it an a well ventliated area. Give it at least 4-5 inches or space on every side. Don't stand it up, let it lay on it's side. When you are done playing it lay a cloth over it to prevent dust from coming in. Monitor your play time, don't play for more then 5-6 hours. If you do RROD, then you will have to send it to Microsoft, they don't send you boxes for your consoles anymore so you should pack it an any box you have lying around and when they send it back keep the packaging. And Rembember---

ONLY YOU CAN PREVENT RED RING OF DEATH!

My friend got the RROD he never sent his system in and didnt play it for like 3 months and turned it on last week and it works fine now. Not saying this is what you should do, its just a interesting RROD story.
